Volunteer
Volunteers are an essential part of the FHC mission, assisting and befriending seniors every day.
As an FHC St. Paul volunteer, you enrich your life and the lives of elders. We have volunteer opportunities to suit most schedules and interests. For more information, please call Jennifer Nelson at 651-696-8416.
Current Volunteer Opportunities:
-
Pet Visitors bring their pets and visit with residents twice a month. No training is necessary, but you must provide current documentation of your pet's vaccinations when you complete volunteer orientation. Pets must be leashed and well behaved when in the facility.
-
Drivers deliver hot noon meals to people who live in the Macalester/West 7th Street area, drive people to their doctor appointments for the Highland Block Nurse Program, bus home Adult Day Service participants and drive apartment tenants on shopping outings.
-
Activity Assistants. Help with activities at St. Mary's Home, and /or the Adult Day program. Volunteers enliven the day with bingo, table games, craft groups, reading, special events, baking, and much more.
-
Chapel Assistants. Work with pastoral care staff to help elders pursue their faith. Volunteers transport residents to and from daily worship at St. Mary’s Home, set up for mass, may be invited to serve as readers or eucharistic ministers, and distribute communion to residents who cannot attend mass.
-
Befrienders. Visit with seniors, read to them, play cards, do their nails, lend an ear and offer their friendship. As part of the Block Nurse Program, Befrienders may visit with seniors who live independently in their private homes.
-
Hospice Volunteers. Provide one-on-one visits with patients and families, and assist with administrative duties. Hospice volunteers receive additional training.
-
Sing Along Pianist. Do you know how to tickle the ivory keys? Would you mind sharing your talent with a lively group of senior citizens? Our independent living apartment complex for seniors is in need of a volunteer who is able to play the piano and lead monthly sing alongs. Music is provided, all you need to do is bring your musical talent and a smile! We are willing to work with your schedule.
-
Bible Study Helper. Are you interested in sharing your faith with the elderly? We are in need of a volunteer who is a practicing Catholic, who enjoys sharing their faith and would enjoy attending a weekly Bible Study with senior citizens. The study is staff lead. We need you to assist with transporting the residents from their floors to the Activity Room and back again at the end of the night. In between, you get to participate in a deep and meaningful Bible Study.
-
Medical Escort. Imagine navigating the ins and outs of a large and intimidating medical building. Now imagine doing so with a visual or hearing impairment. Our residents need your compassionate guidance while on medical appointments outside of our facility. Consider being a medical escort volunteer who rides along with an elderly client to and from their appointment, providing them the assurance that someone who cares will guide them every step of the way.
